Wind Zones of India and What They Mean for Solar

IS 875 (Part 3) divides India into basic wind speed zones. Where a site falls on that map — and its terrain and topography — decides the loads a solar structure must resist.

The wind-speed map

Basic wind speeds range from about 33 m/s in sheltered interior regions to 55 m/s in cyclone-prone coasts. Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal carry higher values.

What higher zones mean

Because pressure scales with the square of wind speed, higher zones sharply increase loads, calling for heavier sections, stronger foundations and, near coasts, more durable coatings.

Frequently asked questions

Does a higher wind zone always mean more steel?
Generally yes — higher design wind loads require stronger members and foundations, though efficient design keeps the increase in check.
