IS 875 Explained: Loads on Structures

ENSOL Engineering TeamPublished 2026-02-011 min read

IS 875 is the Indian Standard 'Code of Practice for Design Loads (Other than Earthquake) for Buildings and Structures.' It is issued in parts — dead loads, imposed loads, wind loads, snow and special loads — and Part 3 (wind) is the one that most often governs solar structures.

The parts of IS 875

Part 1 covers dead loads, Part 2 imposed (live) loads, Part 3 wind loads, Part 4 snow loads and Part 5 special loads and load combinations.

Part 3 — wind

Part 3 provides the basic wind-speed map, the modifying factors and the pressure/force coefficients used to derive design wind loads. It is the backbone of mounting-structure design in India.

Frequently asked questions

Does IS 875 cover earthquakes?
No — seismic design is covered separately by IS 1893. IS 875 covers wind, dead, imposed, snow and special loads.
