Why Hot-Dip Galvanising Lasts Longer

Hot-dip galvanising outlasts thinner coatings for three connected reasons: coating thickness, complete coverage, and the way zinc protects steel sacrificially.

Thickness buys time

Zinc corrodes slowly and predictably. A thicker coating simply has more zinc to consume before the steel is at risk, so life scales with coating mass.

Edge-to-edge coverage

Dipping the finished part coats edges, holes and welds that in-line coatings leave bare — removing the weak points where corrosion usually starts.

Sacrificial protection

Even at a scratch, surrounding zinc corrodes in preference to the exposed steel, protecting it until the local zinc is consumed.

Frequently asked questions

Does thicker galvanising always last longer?
As a rule yes — within a given environment, service life is closely tied to zinc coating thickness.
