Rooftop vs Ground-Mount: The Structural Economics

ENSOL Engineering TeamPublished 2026-02-05Updated 2026-02-151 min read

The choice between rooftop and ground-mount solar is partly about generation and partly about the structure and installation. Each has a different cost and effort profile.

Rooftop

Rooftop uses existing roof area, avoiding land and heavy foundations, but the design must respect the roof type, uplift on the building and access constraints.

Ground-mount

Ground-mount allows optimal tilt and spacing for higher per-kW yield, but adds land, foundations and civil work. At scale it is often the more economical route.

Frequently asked questions

Which is cheaper overall?
It depends on land availability, scale and roof suitability. Rooftop avoids land and foundations; ground-mount can win at scale with better yield.
