Wind Zones of India (IS 875 Basic Wind Speeds)
IS 875 (Part 3) classifies India into six basic wind speed zones. The basic wind speed is the starting point for design wind pressure.
| Basic wind speed | Exposure | Typical regions |
|---|---|---|
| 33 m/s | Lowest | Sheltered interior areas |
| 39 m/s | Low | Parts of central & southern India |
| 44 m/s | Moderate | Large parts of the country |
| 47 m/s | High | Parts of north & west |
| 50 m/s | Higher | Some coastal & northern belts |
| 55 m/s | Highest | Cyclone-prone coasts |
Values are the IS 875 (Part 3) basic wind speeds; the design wind speed then applies terrain, topography and importance factors. Always confirm the exact zone for a specific site.
