Steel Grades for Solar & Structural Steelwork

ENSOL Engineering TeamPublished 2026-02-011 min read

The steel grade sets the yield strength, which in turn decides how much section is needed to carry the loads. In India, structural steel is commonly specified to IS 2062.

Common grades

IS 2062 covers grades such as E250 (formerly Fe410) and higher-strength E350 (Fe490). Higher grades allow lighter sections for the same load, saving weight and, sometimes, cost.

Sections and forming

Solar structures use hot-rolled and cold-formed sections. Cold-formed profiles are efficient for lightweight framing; hot-rolled sections carry heavier loads. Grade and section are chosen together with the coating.

Frequently asked questions

Does a higher steel grade always cost less?
Not necessarily — higher grade allows lighter sections but can cost more per tonne. The optimum balances weight, availability and price.
