Solar Structure Foundation Design Basics

ENSOL Engineering TeamPublished 2026-02-011 min read

The foundation transfers wind, seismic and dead loads from the structure into the ground. The right type depends on the soil, the loads (especially wind uplift) and installation constraints.

Common foundation types

Driven piles are fast where soil allows; concrete pedestals suit weaker or variable soils; ground screws (helical) give quick, low-disturbance installation in suitable ground.

Why soil investigation matters

A geotechnical investigation gives safe bearing capacity and pull-out resistance. Wind uplift often governs, so pull-out capacity — not just bearing — decides the design.

Frequently asked questions

Which foundation is cheapest?
It depends entirely on soil. Driven piles are economical in good soil; poor or rocky ground may require pedestals or screws. Only a soil test can decide.
