Key IS Standards for Solar & Steel Structures

ENSOL Engineering TeamPublished 2026-02-201 min read

Indian Standards (IS codes), published by BIS, provide the design and material basis for solar and steel structures. A handful govern most projects.

The core standards

IS 875 (Part 3) — wind loads; IS 1893 — earthquake-resistant design; IS 2062 — structural steel; IS 4759 / ISO 1461 — hot-dip galvanising.

How they are used

Structures are designed to the load codes, fabricated from IS 2062 steel and galvanised to IS 4759, giving a verifiable quality basis.

Frequently asked questions

Which standard governs wind design?
IS 875 Part 3 covers wind loads, the code that most often governs solar mounting structures.
