Galvanization Weight Calculator
Short answer
Zinc mass (g) = area (m²) × thickness (µm) × 7.14. One micron of zinc over 1 m² weighs 7.14 g.
Zinc coating mass6,069g
Zinc coating mass6.069kg
Coating mass per m²606.9g/m²
Formula
Zinc mass (g) = Area (m²) × Coating thickness (µm) × 7.14
How it works
Zinc has a density of about 7.14 g/cm³, so a 1-micron coating over one square metre weighs 7.14 g. Coating mass per m² is a common way to specify galvanising to IS 4759 / ISO 1461.
Worked example
An 85 µm coating over 10 m² gives 10 × 85 × 7.14 ≈ 6,069 g ≈ 6.07 kg of zinc.
Frequently asked questions
- How is coating mass related to thickness?
- Coating mass per m² (g/m²) = thickness (µm) × 7.14, because zinc's density is about 7.14 g/cm³.
